Letlhakane station commander, Superintendent Michael Maphephu attributed the low level of incidents to a clean up campaign conducted prior to the holidays.

“Prior to Easter, we cleaned up all the drinking spots that sell illegal spirits such as the infamous traditional beer khadi, setopoti and others,” he said.

“We also detained five major brewers (Bomma Sepoto) and hence it was easier to control people’s behaviour over Easter as there was no place they could go to drink alcohol and become a nuisance to the public,” he said.

He noted that during holidays, crimes are usually fuelled by alcohol consumption at such drinking spots and the clean up campaign was a major scoop by police in their efforts to provide security to members of the public.

Letlhakane police, however, did record a few minor road traffic accidents caused by livestock in which victims sustained minor injuries.

One of the accidents involved church members heading to Francistown who suffered minor injuries and were treated and discharged the same day.

“We also caught one man along Thalamabele road with four sachets of a substance that we suspect is cocaine.  He is detained in custody while we await analysis of the substance,” Maphephu said.

Meanwhile, Maun police are investigating a case in which a 29-year-old man died while riding a donkey and crossing a road, after he was hit by a vehicle.

Officer commanding Maun, Senior Superintendent Peter Gochela said the man sustained serious injuries in the head and died after two days in hospital.

He said although Maun was very busy during the holidays with a lot of activities such as the horse race Mascom Derby, car spin and festivals, police did not record any serious criminal activities.

“We did not have any serious incidents such as murder and robbery. We did, however, record three rape cases in Maun and two in Gumare as well as minor accidents which were caused by traffic due to fully packed activities. However, we are happy that we managed to contain the situation,” he said.

He credited the lower crime and incident rates to higher police numbers in patrols, as well as cooperation by members of the public.
