The event will be held at Botswanacraft on May 25, with Wizards of the Desert as the supporting act and DJ Boogie Sid keeping the crowd entertained all night. This Series is meant to appeal to the older generation, who in the words of the organisers, are their biggest supporters.
Trompies did not only make music to be remembered for generations to come, but they also popularised Dickies and made a lot of people wear Converse back in the 90s and early 2000s. Some of the big names they will debut with at this coming series are Spikiri, Mahoota, Jakuramba, Mjokes and Donald Duck. “Be prepared to go back in time with Trompies with hit songs such as magasman, bengimgaka, sweety lavo, and madibuseng, making the day one to remember for days on end,” the organiser, Lecco Kenosi of Leccotainment posted on the event Facebook page.
The aim is to have the series on Fridays, and have a local and international act perform at the location being Botswanacraft. Tickets go for P300 and are sold at Botswanacraft. To fit into the atmosphere, people are encouraged to come dressed in style, with a little of ‘90s look’. With their brightly coloured costumes and streetwise singing and dancing, Trompies have risen to the upper echelon of South African pop music. Their records have sold more than a half million copies while their hits like thalakele, sold more than 40,000 copies. Their 1997 single, magasman, recorded with the late Lebo Mathoso of Boom Shaka fame, has become a national anthem and has been featured on the soundtracks of three South African films. Their record label, Kalawa Jazmee, which they launched with disc jockey Oscar Mdlongwa and producer Don Laka in 1996, is one of the most successful black-owned record companies in South Africa. The Trompies’ albums have featured guest appearances by such leading South African artists as Cindy from Sarafina and Stoan from Bongo Muffin.
