Murder, rape remain national nightmare

The commissioner of Botswana Police Service (BPS) Keabetswe Makgophe shared his concern at the ongoing 46th Botswana Police Senior Officers Annual Conference. He said that a total of 315 people were murdered in 2017 as opposed to 305 in the previous year, which translates to a three-percent increase.
Makgophe said the killings are mostly attributed to misunderstanding between intimate lovers and conflict at entertainment places. He, however, stated that most of the perpetrators are not brave enough so they eventually resort to suicide.
He said that the number of rape cases also increased slightly by one percent with the cases occurring when victims retire from entertainment places with most suspects known to the victims.
Makgophe said they have observed that murder and rape are societal issues that call for joint intervention of all stakeholders.
