Superintendent Waboraro Ramaja said this during consultation meetings with Palapye residents.

“Thieves normally target vulnerable people, therefore when you are too drunk chances of you being robbed are very high. Some people come at midnight from clubs and sleep without locking their doors, which is very reckless as it gives the perpetrators an easy access into the house.

Please drink responsibly to safeguard your properties,” he said. He said that house-breakings are common and committed by local youth, some of who are known to victims.

He said these suspects, “are your children, you stay with them and know their evil deeds, but you are reluctant to report them which in return suffers you the most, as the perpetrators continue to roam the streets without being brought to justice,” he said.

The police statistics showed an alarming increase from 13 house break-ins in the first quarter of 2016, that is January –March, to 32 house break-ins this year.

Ramaja also said that rape, stock theft and drug abuse are also among the top crimes in the area revealing that last year from January to March they recorded 19 cases of rape while this year is 14.

Stock theft cases have gone up to 26 compared to last year’s 22 at the same period.

On their part, residents raised some of their concerns regarding services provided by the police.

Itumeleng Motshabi complained that the police always say they do not have transport to travel to the crime location whenever they report cases. Furthermore he said they take long time to respond to crime.
