Comedians go all out

With the past few years marking growth of comedy on the local scene, it was no surprise to see the comedians go all out despite the presence of their foreign counterparts.  Triccs also known as ‘Lepantsola ka di Jokes’ was the first to impress on stage with his blistering standup routine. Dressed like the lepantsula, Triccs started making jokes about how life in the township (kasi) is different from the flashy life in the suburbs.

“In kasi there is no birthday, you just grow up,” he said.  He joked about how in kasi people do not save money, but rather spend it recklessly.

A subjective outlook on the kasi life is Triccs’s main comedic tool and the audience could not help but laugh nonstop. He said there are words like mololo used to describe the weather, but nobody knows what they mean. “There places like Nhabe, but I don’t even know where in Botswana that place is,” he said.  Then came a laconic comedian called Johnny Pula and he was quick to announce that he is a conspiracy guy.

“I believe that Vee doesn’t talk like that, little guys don’t have huge voices,” he joked.  Johnny Pula delivered his jokes in the form of conspiracy theories with his strong point of view and sense of courage.

“Even Khama doesn’t talk like that,” he said.

Bambino also came on stage super funny as usual.

He spent the first five minutes explaining some dance moves before telling the audience about his awkward moment when he called his mother by mistake when he initially intended to call his girlfriend.  The host, MOD’s command of language and craft is what kept the comedy show going despite that it was late.  He said people react differently to the kind of alcoholic beverage they drink.

“Motho wa shake o ikutlwa go horoma ditena, wa Black Label o ikutlwa go lwa, wa Jack Daniels comes up with business plans,” he said.

Teboho Theoa from Johannesburg also came on stage to test the local waters.  He was able to connect his jokes to the local audience’s sense of humour.  He joked about how races were different in public schools compared to private schools.

“Ko public school ne gotwe, on your marks, get set, ready, steady and go,” he said.  Other acts like Cris Mampane, Tumi Stopnonsons, Thabiso Mhongo and Ribcracker also impressed the crowd that came in large numbers to have their funny bone tickled.
