Masisi said he was hopeful that his party will win Moshupa-Manyana by-election, which will be held on June 16. Moshupa–Manyana constituency became vacant after Masisi, who has been the area MP since 2009, ascended to presidency of the country. The BDP had five contestants - Benjamin Mogodi, Karabo Gare, Boikhutso Disele, Lentswe Mosanako and Stephen Kganela – in their Saturday primaries. The younger Gare emerged victorious.

“E kgaolo ke ya rona ke a go bolelela. Even if the opposition could work hard on it, but BDP will win it. The constituency has eight wards and seven of them are ours. In 2019, we will win all of them. Remember this was my constituency and I voted in the primaries,” Masisi said in an interview with The Monitor after voting closed at Mosielele Primary School polling station.

“But today I want democrats to know that the party comes first and those who might lose should rally behind the candidate who was won. They are all my children and I love them,” he said. The President said the BDP members should know that the BDP would be the one contesting after the primary elections.

He urged all contestants to join hands when campaigning for the June 16 by-election.

“I will also be helping on the campaign for the area. I am a BDP member in a good standing,” he said.

The BDP constitution requires party the candidate to take responsibility to work cooperatively with the branch committee and the unsuccessful candidates in fostering party unity and running a smooth and successful campaign and election. It reads: “The unsuccessful candidates shall consistently demonstrate commitment, loyality and support to the party and its candidate, furthermore ensure that their supporters equally demonstrate loyalty and support to the party and its candidate”.
