What was expected to be a close margin between the two proved to be a walk in the park for Bathai as he grabbed victory by11 votes to six for Bakwadi. Bathai is returning for the second time to lead an association widely regarded as one of the best performing codes at international level.

Bakwadi was the vice president-technical in the previous committee which was led by Sensei David Mathe. When the campaign started a few months ago, sensei Million Masumbika and Mathe had interest but later withdrew from the race.

The incoming president has been given a two-year term as the new BOKA constitution which allows a four-year term has not been adopted. Vice president in charge of administration is Sam Dire who received 12 votes to five for Lere Basupang.

Basupang, a former treasurer, was absent from the meeting. Phineous Motseolapile has returned to the executive committee as secretary general after receiving 11 votes to Kgosietsile Dibotelo’s six. Motseolapile previously served under Bathai’s committee.

Bose Caiphus’ dream of becoming a vice secretary general was dealt a blow when he lost to Pule Kwelagobe 10-7. Mothusi Tsime claimed the position of treasurer after beating Kemmonye Seletamotse by 11 votes to six.

Isaiah Ramontshonyana (public relations officer) and Union Kgafela (vice president-technical) were unopposed.

The nine BOKA affiliates had sent two delegates each, with both casting votes. Eighteen ballot papers were cast for all positions and there was one spoilt vote for each.

Accepting his new role, Bathai said he expected the new leadership to cooperate with affiliates. “I cooperated with Bakwadi during the campaign and I expect the same mentality to continue.

Those who have lost should support us. One of the most critical issue in karate is cooperation,” Bathai said.

He said Mathe had a stable tenure when compared to his previous reign. He added that the association should improve its relations with the media.
