Ministry of labour places interns

Information reaching The Monitor from the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs shows that the programme has admitted diploma holders with scarce cadres and degree holders from all local and external institutions.

The information further shows that out of 1,879 interns, 572 have already found full-time employment in different organisations whilst on the national internship programme.

The government sector has employed 395 interns, 77 employed in local authorities, 42 in parastatal organisations, 52 in the private sector and six are in Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Under this programme, the graduate would be set to gain a P2,000 monthly allowance for a period of twelve months. The programme aims to give the interns more work, experience and exposure in the field of their qualification as agreed at the National Internship Unit.

The graduate will have input in the final report. After twelve months, if the graduates have not found any job elsewhere, they would be required to move to make space for others. However, there is no deadline for registration.

The programme runs for a period of twelve months unless the intern has found full time employment, but if the twelve-month period expires, the interns have to move out so that others can be admitted.

Meanwhile, acting assistant manager of communications in the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, Letso Mpho, has told the Monitor that the interns that were supposed to graduate in February have continued their internship because they have not yet found full-time employment, but the date of completion is not yet set.

He further noted that there is still no arrangement for admitting diploma holders and the date for another intake has not been decided.
