Galaxy are yet to decide on CAF Confederation Cup participation

Galaxy won the right to play in the continental club competition after beating Orapa United 4-3 in a thrilling final at the Francistown Sports Complex last Saturday. Speaking to Mmegi Sport yesterday, club chairman Njabulo Gilika said the executive committee will have to sit down before a decision is made.

“We still have to finalise. These kinds of competitions demand a lot of money. They drain coffers; there is a lot of travelling involved. We still have to sit down with the board and look at all the necessary factors before we could take a decision,” he said.

Debswana Diamond Company mainly funds Galaxy and the company boasted last year’s champions, Orapa United with P1.2 million for their tie against Swaziland’s Mbabane Swallows in February.

However, Gilika said they will not depend on the mining company but would seek other financiers.

“We will not only look at Debswana but we will also look at other stakeholders or potential financiers, but as the club we would love to represent the country in the cup,” he said.

The chairman further expressed faith in the squad’s potential, as he said they have the ability to compete on the continental stage. “If you look at our squad, the majority of our players have represented the country at various levels of the national team,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gilika ruled out the possibility of selling winger Thero Setsile to any local team. Setsile has been one of the stand-out performers since joining the side from Sankoyo Bush Bucks at the start of the season.

The winger is a contender for the green boot with eight goals, four behind leading goal scorer, Terrence Mandaza of Township Rollers. His sterling performances has attracted interest from South African side, Platinum Stars with Orapa United also said to be keeping tabs on the player.

“No, we would not sell him to any team. Of course we will listen to offers from abroad. However, we will not sell him to any team here. It is all about the player at end of the day, but I want to see him making progress in his career hence a move abroad will be more appropriate,” he said.

Setsile’s performances have not gone unnoticed, as he caught the eye of Zebras’ coach Peter Butler. Butler invited the player for the Independence Cup game against Angola last year, where he made his maiden appearance in a 3-0 win.

He was also part of the national team setup that played against Tanzania a fortnight ago.
