The event, a brainchild of rapper Zeus and Hoop City, will see the hip-hop culture and sport being celebrated every Friday at Stanbic Bank Piazza.

The event will have hip-hop artists performing and basketball teams consisting of celebrities, corporates, professionals and amateurs challenging each other.

“There has always been a connection between the hip-hop lifestyle and basketball for a long time in the country. It’s time we celebrated it and also take the sport to a more upstream level,” said Zeus who is the coordinator of the event.

He gave examples of how people from different towns such as Selebi Phikwe and Orapa have always enjoyed both hip-hop and basketball. He stated that a number of hip-hop artists have shown interest in the event.

Zeus noted that the event is set up in a way that there will be hip-hop performances before, in-between and after matches. He hinted that artists such as Bangu, KEB and Samba T are some of the celebrities who will be playing ball.

Since its inception in the 1980s hip-hop has always been interwoven with Basketball, which has led to a number of rappers such as Bow Wow rap about the sport. This coming Friday will see corporate teams face each other, with the celebrity games taking place next week.

“This is more of a chill session while enjoying music and basketball at the same time. It’s an environment where people can come in with their cooler boxes chill, network and enjoy themselves,” said the Hoops and Rhymes business and project manager Moitshepi Seisa.
