MYESCD minister, Thapelo Olopeng, said P648,000 was paid to the BAA for outstanding bonuses, with P112,000 being appearance fees while P536,000 was for incentives for athletes and officials who represented the country at international events. He was responding to a question from Specially Elected Member of Parliament, Mephato Reatile.

“Furthermore, a total of P78,850 was paid to BAA as appearance fees and bonuses for the Rio 2016 Olympics,” the minister said.

He said the only outstanding payment due to BAA is P10,000 for the Africa Cross Country race held in Yaounde, Cameroon last month and P12,000 for the World Cross Country event held in Kampala, Uganda, also in March.

Olopeng reminded Parliament that it was not only athletics which attracts monthly allowances for national team coaches.

He said the P107,000 owed to the Zebras for appearance fee for the Independence Day game against Angola on September 30 have also been cleared.

However, there are outstanding amounts fora other codes, volleyball (P306,000), chess (P19,500), bowling (P12,125), badminton (P31,499.99), athletics (P22,000).

“These were only submitted to my ministry recently largely because the sport codes take too long to make submission of the official result and the list of beneficiaries to cause the payments. Financial constraints also exacerbate delays,” Olopeng said.
