He said the most affected sport codes are swimming, boxing, judo and karate. Segabo said it is not that their main focus is on ball games and athletics, arguing their involvement is limited by lack of facilities.

“Lack of some sporting facilities in the institutions spoil the students’ choice in sport when they get to universities and colleges,” Segabo revealed. “As an association, we highly encourage and support such athletes when they go for competitions,” he said.

He added that the University of Botswana is the only institution that has some facilities for other codes. He said BOTESSA is responsible for students’ expenses when they qualify to compete internationally against other institutions.

Segabo said cricket and rugby have shown interest in promoting the sports in colleges. He said soon cricket will host clinics as a way to launch the sport in some of the colleges.

Meanwhile, BOTESSA will host Brackets A, B, and C athletics competitions over the weekend. The track and field events competition is in preparation for the National Championships that will be held later this month.

Athletes who make it through the National Championships will represent Botswana at the 2018 Confederation of University and College Sport Association (CUCSA) Games.

“Out of the 30 institutions, Bracket A consist of IHS and educational colleges, Bracket B is universities while technical colleges fall under Bracket C.

This is to allow our athletes to compete at levels,” Segabo said. He said the Serowe College of Education will host Bracket A competitions on Saturday while the University of Botswana will host Bracket B on Saturday and C on Sunday.

Students were encouraged to give their all to improve the competition and in the process, maybe, provoke companies into assisting with prize money.

Segabo said when students break records, companies can develop interest in BOTESSA competitions. He said they remain hopeful of clinching deals with companies.
