The memo dated May 24, 2018 from the BDF Air Arm Commander major general Innocent Phatswane directs that all air arm units to only accord Khama VIP status.

“When flying the former president you are required to accord him VIP status and the crew should be as per Air Staff Instructions (ASI),” states the memo.

Khama’s flying of BDF aircraft since he left the army has been subject to probes, but he was never expressly barred from it.

In the 2001 investigation on the matter, the then Ombudsman Lithebe Maine interviewed Khama who told him that part of the deal between him and president Festus Mogae to join politics was that he would continue to fly military aircraft.

Khama told off those who were complaining about his bizarre arrangement saying that they were ‘jealous’ of him.
