Muzila concerned about delayed plots allocation

This is also despite the fact that the servicing of the plots was completed more than five years ago. This is according to Francistown mayor Sylvia Muzila.
“ I am particularly concerned that the allocation of the plots at the Gerald Estate took too long since they became available in 2012. I am referring to 2,515 unallocated plots out of which 1,988 are residential. This is a serious concern and I need your intervention on this matter,” Muzila told councillors during an ordinary full council meeting yesterday.
Muzila could not articulate reasons advanced by the department of lands for not allocating the plots timely. However, throughout her speech she emphasised that the council should do all it can to expedite the allocation of the plots.
Currently there are over 27, 000 people on the Self Help Housing Agency (SHHA) waiting list in Francistown. Some people have been on the waiting list since the late 1980s. Meanwhile, in her address Muzila stated that Francistown would soon have a new primary school.
“The proposed primary school will consist of 16 teachers’ quarters, 14 classrooms, ablution blocks that consists of 27 toilets, a kitchen, an admin block as well as laboratories at a proposed budget of P40 million,” highlighted the mayor.
Muzila noted that the city council has agreed in principle with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development that the proposed school will be constructed at the Gerald Estates.
In recent full council meetings there has been strong suggestions that the Gerald Estate need a second primary school. There are indications that the current primary school will soon struggle to cope with the growing number of pupils.
The growing number of pupils is caused by the fact that the population of the location is increasing rapidly. The Gerald Estate is a relatively new location.
