Butler’s deal expired on March 31 and has been asked to hold fort for three months while applications from other candidates are considered.

“Things are moving slowly regarding the coach’s situation. The BFA has failed to act decisively on this issue. It’s either you keep or release the coach. That should have been decided a long time back,” a source close to the developments said.

BFA public relations officer, Tumo Mpatane said Butler has been offered a three-month extension “to allow for the conclusion of the recruitment process.”

“Remember the post was advertised and we have to allow the recruitment process to be fulfilled. I can’t disclose who applied. All I can say is that we are happy that Butler accepted the extension,” Mpatane said.

But the coach is said to be unhappy with the slow pace of negotiations amid reports that some within the BFA top brass are divided over giving the former West Ham United midfielder a fresh mandate.

The delays are likely to affect the team’s preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in June. Butler joined the Zebras in February 2014 as the former BFA president, Tebogo Sebego’s choice.
