The accident happened on Saturday morning around 7 am. The man was arriving at home on his Nissan Casper when he reportedly ran over the baby.

The baby was rushed to the Mahalapye District Hospital and certified dead upon arrival.  The police have completed their investigations on the matter and the baby’s corpse has since been returned to the family to continue with the burial processes.

Acting on a tip off, the police arrested the man five hours later in Francistown where he had flee to. He was brought back to Mahalapye and detained to assist with investigations.

He is since released and is set to appear before the Mahalapye magistrate court.

Mahalapye region district traffic officer superintendent Kgosienalerona Sechoni said they suspect the culprit was under the influence of alcohol hence he fled the scene.

“In such unfortunate and heartbreaking accidents, one would expect that the culprit immediately hand themselves before the police to help with the investigations as fleeing the scene only leaves a lot of question marks,” he said.

He said these sorts of accidents are common around the households. He said they often happen to household pets and are not usually reported. He advised drivers to be vigilant when driving around the homestead.

“Drivers should make it a norm that they run a check around the car to see if children and animals have not crawled under the vehicles before they could start. These accidents leave families with scars that do not heal,” he said.
