This comes after Nkate and team Mokgweetsi Masisi fell out. Nkate will battle it out with the current secretary general, Botsalo Ntuane who is under Nonofo Molefhi’s team and former secretary general Mpho Balopi.

Nkate is also the former BDP secretary general. He believes he has a strong recognition within the BDP, which could make him win without being under any team.

“I have a good history within the party and my campaign team works tirelessly to ensure that we cover all areas.

We have covered Francistown region, Central, Tswapong, North West and I also took advantage of the women’s wing congress that was in Maun to ask for support from the members,” Nkate said.

He said one needs to raise funds if he/she wants to contest for elections since more money is spent on campaigns and touring the country to lure for support.

“This whole thing will in future disadvantage those who don’t have money, but working for the party immensely. Parties have foot soldiers who work for it during the good and bad times,” he said.

The former ambassador who also served in various ministries before losing elections said as part of his campaign, he would engage experts to help him to campaign on social media by opening a campaign page to engage his supporters and other people.

He continued; “one of the things that I want to look into when voted into office is to find ways in which my party could do to improve results from 2014. We have to accept that our party did not do well in 2014.

There is need to work together as BDP members and treat each other equally.

This issue of alignment or helping people because they had supported you during the campaign is the one dividing members.” Nkate said BDP needs united democrats now than ever before.

Nkate said he is concerned that Batswana are also polarised and the spirit of unity has died amongst them.

He said the BDP, as the ruling party should be very worried when something like this happens in the country since this is a sign that it could lose elections at any time.
