Minister of Basic Education, Bagalatia Arone, also a former teacher, will accompany him.

Botswana Sector of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU), publicity secretary Edwin Maitshoko told Mmegi they are elated that the current President has decided to grace the event, adding that it was a morale booster, as well as indication of change of attitude toward the trade unions and teachers.

Maitshoko said they have high hopes that the President and his education minister will reverse a raft of draconian laws including that of teachers in the essential service category.

“The President being a former teacher, and so the Minister of Basic Education being a former teacher, give us confidence and hope going forward that we have leadership that understands education issues much broadly and better,” Maitshoko added.

The Teachers Day celebrations main event traditionally sees hundreds of teachers being given honours for their outstanding contributions to education.

This year the teachers have donated a recreational park in Charles Hill. The park has been built on the Village Development Committee’s plot and can host parties, weddings, as well as act as a recreational facility for children, according to Maitshoko, who added that annually the trade unions come together to support a community project in the host town. He said they have donated houses to the needy in previous years as part of this programme.
