Miss Charity supports charity organizations

Pageantry director Rentse Maganu-Ugokwe told Arts & Culture that Miss Charity is an annual pageant. She said the queen would be taking care of a selected charity organisation for her reign, which she will work with and assist.

“We have realised that there are many non-governmental charity organisations across the country that need recognition and support. Most of those organisations are in remote rural areas. We want to give such organisations recognition not only here in Botswana, but also on an international platform,” she said.

She added that even though such NGOs play a tremendous role in the lives of their people, their good work and those of the women who dedicate their lives to caring for the disadvantaged go unnoticed. She explained that most people affected by poverty, disabilities and other needs are living in remote rural areas and therefore there was need for such places to have organisations that could assist.

Maganu-Ugokwe said she hoped that since the country has a First Lady, their voices would be heard. She called on the First Lady to empower both young and older women. She also called on the youth to participate in social responsibility initiatives explaining that they were not only made for the older women.

“We want to groom young people at a tender age to participate in charity initiatives. That way, we will have responsible future leaders of our country. In other countries more especially in the European countries, young people are engaged in charities. Our events will include various activities such as women empowerment, financial education workshops and others,” she said.

She explained that the pageant would also empower young people more especially those who benefited from the Youth Development Fund with skills that would help them sustain their businesses.

The auditions of this beauty pageant are ongoing and there is no age, height, marital status or body restrictions. Only youth aged between 25 and 35 will be allowed to register. Registration fee is P350. Maganu-Ugokwe called on companies for support .

Meanwhile, Kentse Foundation has recently donated over 40 complete school uniforms to underprivileged pupils in Kotalaname. Maganu-Ugokwe has therefore called on students that complete their Standard Seven, Form Three and Five to donate their uniforms to the needy students after sitting for their final examinations.
