The new committee will be in charge for the next two years after a shock exit of four executive committee members last month had thrown BAA into a crisis.

Mooketsi said it was important for the affiliates and his executive committee to work as a team. He said affiliates should desist from influencing committee members to disclose internal matters. He said international trips also cause headaches for the association as officials always scramble to be part of the travelling delegation.

He said such behaviour should come to an end. Mooketsi said every member of the committee should execute their mandate to grow athletics in the country. He raised concern about the constitution, saying gaps that exist in the document should be closed. Mooketsi said the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) should be approached to offer guidance. He noted that it was scary when the BNSC threatened to take over the running of the BAA. “You, as affiliates are to blame for the mess in the association. I would not allow that to happen again. We are going to audit clubs, not financial state but to check if they are active. We must find out the reasons why clubs are not functioning. Clubs should have structures in place,” he said. Mooketsi said the association must make sure that clubs send athletes to participate in competitions. He said by next year, all athletes should be affiliated to a club.

BNSC director-technical, Bobby Gaseitsiwe said people must know that when they do things, they must be aware that at some point it will be them in the inside and it would not be nice.

He said there were some people who wanted to manipulate the situation for their own benefit. “BNSC recognises the new constitution, the 2011 one does not exist to us. If there are some gaps, we should close them. We are in transition to 2019. It is now up to the leadership that you have elected to come up with a roadmap going forward. They must discuss the constitution and identify articles which need amendment.

They must call a meeting to discuss the constitution,” Gaseitsiwe said. Meanwhile, Mooketsi and Kenneth Kikwe (vice president) were unopposed while Raymond Phale and Kelebogile Mogapi battled for the position of secretary general. Phale received 21 votes while Mogapi got only two.

Ipolokeng Ramatshaba had an easy victory over Lulu Basinyi for the public relations officer portfolio with 19 votes to four.

Other committee members are: Olebogeng Oitebetse (vice secretary general) and Brian Mosweu (treasurer),  Moses Raphutse (additional member-north) and Mompati Ngwako (additional member-south).
