Letshwiti Blasts 'Incompetent' BPL Clubs

In a heated discussion on privatisation and youth development, during the BPL annual general meeting held at the Lekidi Football Centre on Saturday, Letshwiti held nothing back as he blamed the incompetent clubs for the sluggish growth of football locally.
“We as the BFA are already funding the Under-17 and Under-15 development leagues, but you as the clubs should be funding these leagues.
I am asking myself how you are going to run these leagues when you cannot even run your teams. Societies think they run the clubs. Morafe cannot own a team; there are people in societies that think they own teams. We should deal away with those people. We should come up with compliance manual that will allow investors to put money in football,” Letshwiti told the gathering.
He however, admitted that the BFA constitution does not force clubs to move into the privatisation model.
BPL chairperson, Jagdish Shah on his part admitted that the clubs are struggling and advised that they should do away with internal fights for the progression of local football. “We have not put our houses in order. We are always blaming the BFA, the societies and everyone else. But as clubs we should first put our houses in order in such a way that we will be able to take football forward,” Shah said.
The local elite league teams have been struggling finally for the past few seasons with the most hit being sleeping Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Extension Gunners and Gaborone United. The teams have failed to attract investors as they struggled with paying both their technical and staff.
At the gathering, delegates agreed that the BPL should come up with compliance manual that would help clubs sustain themselves whilst attracting investors on the way. Currently only league champions, Township Rollers and institutional teams have been able sustain themselves financially.
