Masunga returns to active politics

This despite having, for nearly four weeks, constantly rubbished claims that he intends to quit his government job to focus on politics.
Today (Tuesday), he told Mmegi Online that he left his position as a research officer last week Thursday. His five-year contract was supposed to come to an end late in 2019.
Masunga also confirmed that his decision to quit his job was to contest the BDP primaries at Francistown Central ward.
Indications are that Masunga was influenced to quit his job by the area legislator Buti Billy who is trying to solidify his position in lower party structures ahead of the much-anticipated primaries.
Buti is widely expected to battle it out with former Francistown mayor James Kgalajwe at the BDP primaries.
“Apart from declaring interest I cannot say much because the party is yet to invite those who want to contest the primaries to apply or sanction campaigns,” he said.
Masunga served as Itekeng ward councillor for a single term. He lost his seat to Lazarus Tlou of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) at the 2009 general elections.
A year later Masunga was among a host of BDP members who quit the party to form the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) where he was immediately appointed the interim secretary for the Francistown region.
His stay in the opposition was however short-lived. He retraced his footsteps to the BDP a year later.
The nomadic Masunga also contested the BDP primaries at Tati Siding East ward and lost ahead of the 2014 general elections. He would later relocate to the current Francistown Central ward.
