It is fencing’s inaugural meeting since the body was established in 2007.

The federation surfaced during the 2014 Africa Youth Games. BAFF has eight clubs; Mogoditshane, Tlokweng, Westwood, Sir Seretse Khama Junior Secondary School, Serowe (two) Legae and University of Botswana.

BAFF president, Gaolatwe Modongo told Mmegi Sport that it was important for them and other National Sport Associations (NSAs) to comply with the directive.

He said his federation has everything in order and candidates vying for the positions are qualified. He said the directive does not directly affect them.

“We are a small association. Our grant is about P200,000 and we do not keep the funds. We request what we want to use as and when from BNSC. The directive does not really have any impact on us,” he said.

Modongo said going forward they might get big sponsorship deals, hence the need to have the right people in the positions. Modongo is seeking another term to lead the federation. He faces a challenge from Mandlenkosi Masuku.

Modongo was elected BAFF president in 2015 and by then, there were only five fencers country-wide.

“Upon arrival in office, I divided my mandate into short, medium and long term. My immediate plan was to create clubs, awareness about fencing and develop interest from the public. I also wanted to focus on training of coaches and officials. It was important for fencing to have an identity and have local competitions. I believe that my short-term has been a success,” Modongo said.

He said the mid-term plan was to compete in international competitions. He said in the beginning it was difficult to sell the sport as it was still new in the country. Modongo said the intention is to move onto the world stage and hopefully, bring medals. He said local officials should be seen officiating in international matches. Modongo said that can only happen through hard work and unity within the federation.
