BAA treasurer, Brian Mosweu admitted to Mmegi Sport yesterday that the association has never given cross country the attention it deserves. He said the focus has always been on track events.  Mosweu said BAA has structures meant to develop cross country runners.

“We have structures in place and we are working on ways of packaging them so they work and bring us results. We always send athletes to compete at international cross country events, but none of them performed well,” Mosweu said.

The plight of cross country runners came to light after the recent performance of the team that competed at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Uganda over the weekend.

Mema Tiango, Sylvester Koko, Amantle Kekganetswe, Modisagape Dikgakgamatso and Rapula Diphoko were the country’s representatives.

Mosweu said the other challenge was that the association is reeling from a leadership vacuum following the resignation of its president, Moses Bantsi and three other executive committee members.

“We would be in a position to tell you everything next week about the plans we have for cross country after filling the vacant position. That is when you would be able to talk to the relevant people,” he said.

Meanwhile, cross country sensation, Onneile Dintwe left the country yesterday for South Africa to compete in the SPAR Women’s race.

The race would be held in Cape Town this weekend. It is her first race since she recovered from an injury. The next stop for Dintwe is the Two Oceans marathon also scheduled for Cape Town over the Easter holidays.
