New twist in karate race as president withdraws

David Mathe

He follows in Million Masumbika’s footsteps after the former president opted out of the race last week.

Mathe and his committee came into office in 2015 on a two-year term, after surviving a motion of no confidence a couple of times.

He told Mmegi Sport that he felt that it was time for him to give others a chance. Again, Mathe said the differences within the committee forced him to reconsider.

“I felt that the team that I was working with was not perfect. This time around I wanted a team that can deliver. I did not want a situation whereby we spend a lot of time working on our differences as a committee instead of focusing on delivering on our mandate,” he said.

Mathe said he was unable to find the right people he could work with, hence his decision against seeking a new term.

Mathe said it is important for people to be placed in positions in line with their proficiency in order for them to deliver effectively. He said having more candidates contesting for the same position is a waste of resources, citing the post of the president where there were four candidates.

A list leaked to Mmegi Sport shows Bathai and Bakwadi are vying for the president’s post while Lere Basupang and Samuel Dire will battle it out for the vice president-administration’s position.

Union Kgafela is unopposed for the vice president-technical post, while Phineas Motseolapile and Kgosi Dibotelo are the two candidates for the secretary general position.

Pule Kwelagobe and Bose Caiphus are eyeing the position of assistant secretary general.  Kemmonye Seletamotse and Mothusi Tsiane will battle to decide the new treasurer while the list shows Isaiah Ramontshonyane unopposed for the post of public relations officer.
