This comes a few days after five examiners were arrested for allegedly selling drivers’ licences.

Last week The Monitor sister newspaper, Mmegi reported that five examiners from the DRTS offices in Gaborone, Molepolole and Mahalapye have been arrested for allegedly selling drivers’ licences.

The arrests led to a shutdown in licensing services a fortnight ago at DRTS in Gaborone at Maruapula, Molepolole and Mahalapye centres,

Fresh information is that while more examiners are likely to be implicated, for now only five are suspects, and 29 licence holders are being questioned.

The Monitor has it in good authority that the implicated examiners allegedly gave people marks when they never undertook a road test while others would be given marks without having sat for a theory test.

Some would be using automatic cars and would be given marks as if they were using manual cars.

The source further stated that licence classes in question varied from light duty vehicles, through heavy duty, and in some instances, extra heavy duty. Police spokesperson, Witness Bosija confirmed the latest development. “We are currently questioning 29 people in relation to the case where we are questioning five transport examiners over issuance of various drivers’ licence classes.

The investigation is broad and still ongoing. It’s expected more people will be questioned,” he said.

Bosija had said it was disconcerting that people perish in accidents of which unduly licensed drivers play a big role. Bosija was however still hamstrung to spill much on the scandal, as they look to make more arrests. DRTS Director Bokhutlo Modukanele earlier this week said they are yet to take action against the implicated employees.

“The matter is still with the Police. We’ll wait for their report and recommendations before taking any action,” he said.
