The party secretary general Venter Galetshabiwe confirmed the development to Mmegi. This comes amid allegations late last week that Gudu has joined the ruling party, something he moved quickly to dismiss.

“We recently met as the party national executive committee (NEC) and we decided that it will be prudent for us to lift the suspensions of the two men. We made the recommendations to the party central committee and it decided in our favour,” Galetshabiwe said, adding that Kuchwe and Gudu went for a hearing and the NEC findings “were that they were wrong but suspending them was not an ideal thing to do. It would have created instability within the party”.

The hearing took place a few months ago but the party did not issue an immediate verdict.

Late last year the party indefinitely suspended Kuchwe and Gudu following their decision to attend a meeting and press conference convened by the new Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) in Gaborone. The new UDC featured the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), which at the time the BPP said was not properly welcomed into the coalition.

During the press conference (late last year) Gudu and Kuchwe said that they were among four people chosen to represent the BPP in the UDC central committee.

Gudu said that their positions as some of the four representatives of the BPP in the UDC were rubberstamped by the party (BPP).

He added that they were permitted to attend the UDC meeting by the BPP.The BPP immediately released a statement dismissing Gudu’s position before imposing the suspensions on the duo.
