Toyota leads as over 50,000 more cars registered in 2017

Statistics Botswana numbers released earlier today also indicate that the total vehicle population rose nearly six percent in 2017 to 515,396 vehicles, the majority of these being Toyota passenger vehicles. 

Honda was the second most popular brand registered last year, continuing its climb over previously fashionable makes such as Volkswagen, Mazda and Ford. In the fourth quarter of the year, at least 85% of the new registrations were of used vehicles, a trend that generally applies to the whole year. 

“In the fourth quarter of 2017, the bulk of the vehicles which were registered for the first time came from Japan (73.8%) South Africa followed with 15.3% while Singapore contributed 4.6%,” Statistics Botswana researchers said in a report released earlier today.

“Out of the vehicles from Japan, 99.4% were used, with only 0.5% and 0.1% being brand new and re-built respectively. Most of the used vehicles were from Japan with 86.0% of total used vehicles. Japan was followed by Singapore and South Africa with 5.4 and 4.5% respectively.” 

Honda’s popularity has soared over the years following the introduction of its second-hand Fit and Jazz hatchback models, which make up an overwhelming number of the Hondas on the roads. The Fit and Jazz models are preferred by taxi service providers due to their economic fuel consumption and durability.
