Sydney Kafeka, a losing candidate, had lodged an appeal with the Electoral Committee arguing the elections were not fair. The Electoral Committee this week concurred with Kafeka, and therefore ordered a re-run. Lesego Leaketsa, viewed as anti-establishment and former president Tebogo Sebego’s sympathiser, had triumphed in the elections. Kafeka had complained that people who had not shown intention to stand for elections were actually voted into the committee.

He said the elections were not fair, as some delegates were not allowed to vote, nominate or even canvass for support during the meeting.

“After a thorough deliberation on your appeal, the committee came to the conclusion that your appeal is sustained and the election held on June 9, 2018, herein declared null void,” read the response to Kafeka.

The Electoral Committee directed the NEC to call a special meeting of the region to re-run the elections. The committee said only aspirants whose names were released through the BFA Circular No. 20 of 2018 are allowed to stand for positions in the Regional Committee.

It was also ruled that nomination from the floor be exercised only for positions where there are no prior nominees.

Any aggrieved party has the right to appeal the Electoral Committee’s decision with the Electoral Appeals Committee.

The regional elections are seen as critical ahead of the 2020 BFA National Executive Committee elections, where former president Tebogo Sebego is likely to make a come back.
