GU To Appoint Coach This Week

The post became vacant towards the end of last season following the departure of Rodolfo Zapata. News emerging from the GU camp is that Stanoljovic, who had a short stint with the club in 2015, eyes a return following his release from Township Rollers where he served as a technical advisor for a year.

The Serbian will, however, compete with Tshosane, who has not been active. Preference is said to lean on the latter by the club’s management, but it would take an uphill battle to convince him to return to coaching.

 GU will return for pre-season on July 2, 2018 as they gear up for the next campaign. Following the sales of the attacking duo of Thatayaone Kgamanyane and Kabelo Seakanyeng to Chippa United, GU has released a trio of Tumisang Orebonye, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and Jackson Lesole to Rollers as the club continues to battle financial problems.

 The trio signed two-year-deals with GU benefiting P300,000 for Orebonye and Ditlhokwe who still had running contracts with the club. In a statement released by GU general manager, Olebile Sikwane, the club was ‘smart’ to sell the players to their rivals given their financial situation. He also said GU would benefit a significant percentage of the players are sold abroad, which is rumoured to be 50%.

“The club saw it prudent and smart to conclude a historic purchase agreement with Township Rollers in which a sum of money has been paid to the club while GU retains a significant percentage in the future sale to any professional league club outside Botswana.

This for us proved to be a worthwhile investment considering their respective ages and ability. Teenage (Orebonye) was on a contract due to expire on May 2020 while TT’s (Ditlhokwe) contract elapses December 2018.”

“The truth is that Teenage had communicated his position on the financial impasse that sandwiched the team last season and we saw it prudent to not pursue any further dialogue but to do business.

TT was a purely business decision also based on his contract situation, which proved difficult to extend beyond December 2018. This we saw as an opportunity to do business on our terms and we are excited that Township Rollers were professional enough to concede to most of our requirements and we are delighted to start a new era in which rivalry ends on the pitch only,” the statement read.

The trio take the number of players departing GU to seven, with Karabo Phiri and Kutlwelo Mpolokang said to have signed with Jwaneng Galaxy.

The club has received P1.8 million from all the sales and has started recruiting for the next season. They announced the signing of goal minder, Lesego Bosekeng from relegated side, TAFIC. Meanwhile, former Rollers assistant coach, Mogomotsi ‘Teenage’ Mpote has joined Orapa United.
