No arrest yet in Desert Race killing

The police statement comes after illegitimate reports on social media suggested that suspects have been identified and arrested in relation to the matter.

The young woman was found dead, naked and dumped in the bush in the early hours of Sunday of the annual 1,000km Desert Race competition, otherwise popularly known as Mantshwabisi, in Jwaneng.

“No suspect(s) have been arrested yet in relation to the incident, but investigations into the matter are ongoing.  The police are working tirelessly to resolve the matter. Investigations are yet to establish who the suspect(s) behind the horrific acts are,” Jwaneng Station Commander, superintendent Thuso Basuti said. 

He said that it appears that the woman had only visited Jwaneng to attend the competition as their investigations have established she was not a resident of the mining town.

“Even though having relatives residing in Jwaneng our investigations reveals that she had only visited Jwaneng that weekend.  We suspect that just like other revellers she might have come to entertain herself at the Desert Race competition that had attracted multitudes.”

The police received the report of the young woman’s killing early morning from a security officer who was knocking off.  He was walking along the streets of Unit 2 location in Jwaneng when he discovered her lifeless body in a dense bush.

The police are yet to carry out tests to establish if the deceased was sexually assaulted or not.
