BDP picks �replacement� councilor

Rantalajwe, a staunch member of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), has already begun serving in the Southern District Council after his nomination by Local Government and Rural Development minister, Slumber Tsogwane. The veteran politician is due to be sworn in at the Southern District full council meeting billed for March 20.
In an interview, Rantalajwe confirmed that he received a letter of appointment on February 14 and immediately started his duties as a councillor.
“This is my second chance and I am ready to serve my community like I did before,” he said. Rantalajwe served as a councillor for Mokhomma ward between 2004 and 2014. He also served as the first chairman of Mabutsane Sub-Council for seven years after its establishment.
He however lost his council seat to the Umbrella for Democratic Change in the 2014 general elections, but remained influential in the ruling party in the area.
Rantalajwe served as the BDP’s constituency chairperson between 2015 and 2016.
His return means he will serve the remaining three-year term until the general elections in 2019. The position fell vacant last year after Reatile, who was also Southern District chairman, received a Presidential call-up to become a Specially Elected MP.
The Southern District Council is made up of 64 councillors from Moshupa, Kanye, Goodhope and Mabutsane Administrative authorities.
