The festival organiser Lecco who is signed under Arthur Mafokate’s 999 records told Arts & Culture that although the event has been synonymous with kwaito music festivals it's is not all about kwaito.
“We want to bring back old memories and appreciate old genres, so it is only that we kick-started the series with kwaito this year with Trompies,” he said.
He said they would bring more classic genres like disco and jazz in the future. He said already people are excited that the songbird dubbed The Princess of Africa is coming.
The last Trompies show was mostly attended by the youth and with Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Lecco said the elderly should also come and party with the singer who made their youthful days.
Lecco said they also have Brown Sugar of ‘motho ke motho ka batho’ on the lineup. He said even though their last show was sold out at Botswana Craft, they still chose the venue because of security.
“People do not want to be too crowded but we might have an open space event at the end of the year. Right now, people should focus on getting tickets early to avoid missing out,” he highlighted.
He added that some of the money from ticket sales would be donated to Botswana Society for the Deaf. “We also want to give back to the community,” he said.
With her infectious pop melodies, Yvonne Chaka Chaka helped to turn bubblegum disco into South Africa’s dominant dance music of the 1980s and early ‘90s.
Working with producer Sello ‘Chicco’ Twala, she followed her 1984 hit debut single, I’m In Love With a DJ, with a string of gold and platinum hits.
Chaka Chaka is a performing artist, entrepreneur and humanitarian.
From the beginning of her meteoric rise in 1985 as a music star during the height of Apartheid was known as the Princess of Africa.
As a young performer, Yvonne was the first black child to appear on South African television, in 1981.
Since then she has consistently developed her creative capabilities and expanded her media repertoire to include musician, record producer, talk radio and television shows, and acting in several South African television dramas.
