Tenth prison escapee nabbed

The arrested jailbird is one of the 18 men who escaped from the Francistown-based Centre for Illegal Immigrants at the beginning of the year.

The escapees are facing serious crimes such as murder, armed robbery and rape.

The commander of Gerald police station, Superintendent Edward Leposo said the escapee, Willie, who was wanted in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, was arrested on Saturday at Borolong, around 20 kilometres west of Francistown.

Police have now arrested all Batswana escapees; Musa, Gaomodimo Molosiwa and Givemore Chaloba, and are now left with 10 Zimbabwean jail breakers.

Recently, Molosiwa attracted the wrath of the Magistrate court which  sentenced him to a total of 14 strokes on two separate occasions after he was found guilty of bringing the integrity of the Court and the whole Judicial system into disrepute.

Magistrate Molobe sentenced Molosiwa to 14 strokes after he said his charge of escaping from lawful custody should be dismissed and only be reinstated after Charlotte Ndlovu, a deceased inmate who was also charged with escaping from lawful custody and murder, has resurrected.

Chaloba was arrested in Zimbabwe and the State is in the process of preparing his extradition papers so that he can be brought back to Botswana to face the law.

The State is also preparing extradition papers for Thabani Moyo who was also arrested in Zimbabwe.

The police have so far arrested Mlindeni Moyo, Mthokodzisi Sibanda, Sicelo Sibanda, Goodwin Mapunganyika, Rowland Moyo, Molosiwa, Thabani Moyo and Ndlovu.

Ndlovu died at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital a few days after he was arrested, but was buried in Francistown because his family did not have the funds to repatriate his remains to Zimbabwe.

When the escapees appeared in Court shortly after they were re-arrested, they claimed that the police tortured them, which may have led to Ndlovu’s death, but those allegations will remain a mystery since they will never be tested in Court because Ndlovu is now late.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is also in the process of bringing Ndlovu’s death certificate to court so that his case can formally be struck from the Court roll.
