Moseki welcomes Maiketso

Moseki has contested and lost the elections against the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) since 2004.

He has never gone through the BCP primaries in order to secure his party’s ticket and it will be his first.

“I am ready for anyone who wants to challenge me at the primaries. It is Maiketso’s democratic right to challenge me at the primaries.

When you go into a competition you go with the desire to win and I believe I have the right credentials that can help me win primaries against Maiketso,” he said, adding that competition in an election enhances democracy.

The BCP will contest the 2019 general elections under the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), a coalition of four opposition parties.

Last week, Maiketso made known his wish to challenge Moseki at the party’s next year primary elections.

Maiketso, who is also a former Francistown mayor, said that he believes he has the “character and charm” that can help him win the constituency that has eluded the BCP for years.

Immediately after losing the 2014 general elections, Moseki declared his ambitions to have another go at elections in 2019.

At the time, Moseki said that the constant improvement he has enjoyed over the years while contesting elections against the BDP gives him hope that he will one day wrestle the constituency from the ruling party.

In the 2014 general elections, Moseki amassed 3,573 votes against the BDP’s 3,818. Moseki contested the 2014 elections against Buti Billy.

At the 2004 general elections a novice Moseki managed 1,419 votes while Phandu Skelemani garnered 3255 votes.

The Botswana People’s Party’s Kumbulani William attracted 869 votes.
