Sekoma divided over headman successor

Tefiso was however caught in between a heated debate last Friday on who should ascend the seat after the passing on of Sebopa Leremela. Most of the people nominated Mooketsa Bosigo.

He is said to be instrumental in driving community events and helping his fellow tribesmen where possible. The old man remained silent for the whole of the proceedings and his opposers described how he was not the rightful heir.

One of the youth who opposed Bosigo’s nomination, Tiroyaone Letlamma, brought a family tree and a letter signed by the Letlamma family to indicate that they have nominated Aisiwakae Letlamma to be the headman.

Tiroyaone described how their family relates to the royalty and further advised Sekoma residents to follow the rightful hierarchy. He also read a letter from Aisiwakae accepting the nomination from his family.

However Kedifentse Dikgokgwane, the son to the late headman Sebopa Dikgokgwane also stood up to nominate himself for the post.

Though he is related to the Letlamma family, he disputed that they met as a family and nominated Aisiwakae. He vowed not to let his father’s chair to be thrown to the wrong people.

His sister, Keborotswe Dikgokgwane also nominated him claiming that they were the rightful family to inherit the chair after the passing on of their father.

As the heirachy stands, Letlamma Dikgokgwane  passed the button to his brother Sebopa Dikgokgwane some years back while his children were still young. After he (Sepoba) passed away, the seat fell vacant, hence the nomination.

Tefiso is caught between three names of Mooketsa Bosigo, Aisiwakae Letlamma and Kedifentse Dikgokgwane and he will hand them over to the Senior Chief Moletsane of Mabutsane to advise on the next move.

Bosigo remained silent and could not be drawn into commenting while Letlamma said his next move will be determined by the outcome of the response from Moletsane. Dikgokgwane remained unshaken that he is the rightful heir after his father’s death.

It is not the first time Sekoma chieftaincy blew the dust. Last year, Kgosi Tefiso’s brother, Fraser Tefiso lobbied a pressure group to dethrone his brother accusing him of active opposition politics.

For the past 26 years, Sekoma which falls under Jwaneng/Mabutsane constituency, has been a Botswana National Front stronghold, and the accusing finger was pointing at Kgosi Tefiso for allegedly using his powers to lobby residents to continue voting for the opposition in the area.

He was also accused of wrongfully appointing Letsaga ward headman through voting. Fraser’s argument was that the late headman, Mokgobi Sebotho’s daughter, Dudu Sebotho was supposed to ascend the throne as opposed to Mphamo Sebotho who won elections by 19 people against Fraser who was voted by one person.

Fraser said he intentionally stood for elections to show his brother that the elections were uncalled for and unfair as other people from different wards also came to vote.
