Angola was awarded the hosting rights four years ago, but kept the CUCSA executive committee in the dark as they could not commit to hosting the next year’s spectacle.

Botswana Tertiary Student Sport Association (BOTESSA) public relations officer, Duncan Segabo told Mmegi Sport yesterday that Angola failed to attend the weekend CUCSA assembly held in Gaborone without explanation.

He said Angola also failed to submit the report on their progress regarding the preparations to host the games. “The CUCSA executive committee is expected to write countries requesting them to host the 2018 games.

At the moment, countries have not shown interest to host the games. We might have interest, but we are yet to discuss that with the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC),” he said.

Botswana has been given hosting rights for the 2020 games. According to Segabo, Botswana should come up with valid reasons to convince BNSC if they are to host CUCSA games next year.

Meanwhile, Segabo said the delegates have taken a resolution that different sporting codes should have their own championships before they proceed to the main event. Segabo said delegates were not satisfied with the two-year timeframe between the CUCSA games.

“The CUCSA competitions are held after every two years. Instead of our athletes waiting for the championships there will be more activities organised by CUCSA. There will be sports code competitions in order to prepare our athletes for the championship,” Segabo said.

He said these activities will benefit students in terms of fitness because they will not have to wait for two years to compete. He said the code competitions will include all the 10 CUCSA members.

CUCSA members are Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The last games were hosted by Zimbabwe in 2016.
