Ferry your own rubbish - GCC

And because city authorities cannot say when they will be in a position to clean up, citizens of the capital city are expected to do their dirty job by ferrying their own rubbish to the city's landfill at Gamodubu.

Pressed for answers, the city's Public Relations Officer, Seeletso Lekgaba, said the municipality was fully aware it had 'always performed unsatisfactorily' since its contracts with private garbage collectors expired on December 31.

Seeletso said GCC was faced with a serious shortage of the means to collect garbage and keep the city clean.

'We don't have enough compactors,' she explained.

While many of the capital city's citizens seem puzzled why rubbish lies uncollected, Lekgaba said the council had always communicated with the public through kgotla meetings, newspapers, the radio and television.

'The public has been consulted at different forums, including through public address vans,' Dlamini said, adding that the Council was making arrangements to repair the necessary machinery and to purchase new equipment.

'But we are not in a position to say when that will be done, especially that compactors are not usually found readily available but are designed based on order specifications,' she said.In the meantime, Lekgaba said, members of the public may ferry their waste to the city's landfill at Gamodubu, approximately 20 kilometres west of Gaborone.
