Monnakgosi becomes a Professor Of Divinity

More than 100 friends and special guests honoured Monnakgosi and his wife Elizabeth, who also received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degree at Goodnews Ministries premises on Saturday.

A Mechanical Engineer by training, Monnnakgosi started Goodnews Ministries in 1990. A pentecostal charismatic movement, the church drew thousands of young people from across the country.

Devil Destroyer or DD to many of his friends and colleagues, Monnakgosi imposed a strict regimen of rules for his followers, which included among others forbidding non-married members to indulge in sex, to cohabit or wear mini skirts.

Monnakgosi controversially maintained that it is biblically wrong for people to do certain hairstyles, make-up and even to wear earrings.

However Goodnews Ministries became a household name, as like with the early Christian Church miracles reportedly followed Monnakgosi or his followers wherever they went.

A few years back, Monnakgosi controversially banned the bride price in his church as he maintained it was not a God-sanctioned practice, but more importantly that it prevented people from marrying.

'Honourary degrees are a recognition reserved for eminent individuals with national or international reputations, or individuals who have rendered lifelong service to an institution through board membership, volunteerism and major contributions,' said Omega University Chancellor Professor Vusi Sibiya. 'Dr Monnakgosi is well qualified to receive this recognition under these guidelines. This honourary degree is indeed-one of Omega's highest honours and it could not be going to a more deserving individual,' he said, adding the University has appointed Monnakgosi, a faculty member of Omega Global University as its country liaison.

He said that Monnakgosi's long and exemplary life is a fine example of the fervent stewardship of his time and resources for the service of others and God.

A native of Mankgodi and a graduate of University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS) Monnakgosi is actively involved in community welfare projects which include, the Bahurutshe Community Development Trust and Refugees Welfare Project, which distributes toiletry and food baskets to refugees.

Sibiya also conferred an honorary PhD upon Dr Christopher Theophilus Daza. Omega Global University is based in Nelspruit, South Africa and offers degrees in Theology and Pastoral leadership, ICT and the Social Sciences.
