Barclays Botswana initiates identity shift to Absa

Speaking at an event to mark the shift, acting managing director, Mumba Kalifungwa said that the changeover would transform the bank into a modern, fast thinking and relevant bank.

“Barclays Bank of Botswana will be renamed at a later stage, subject to regulatory and other approvals in the country. We will continue to trade and operate under the Barclays brand in Barclays brand in Botswana even though our parent name has changed to Absa Group Limited,” he said.

According to Kalifungwa, the name change signals the start of a new era for the group as a standalone African banking group with deep roots on the continent on which it has operated for more than 100 years.

Today Barclays Africa Group officially changed its name to Absa Group Limited resulting in the group trading under its new name and new share code (ABG) on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Barclays ATMs, forms, branches, stationery, platforms and other assets across 12 countries will also be updated with new Absa brand design.

Barclays subsidiaries in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia will be renamed within the next two years, subject to approvals.
