The primaries will book candidacy for the 2019 general elections, which the BCP will contest under the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) banner.

There has been constant speculation in political circles that Maiketso wants to challenge attorney, Morgan Moseki at the BCP primaries.

Maiketso is in his second term as a councillor. He also had a three-month stint as mayor during his first term, but was toppled through a motion of no confidence, a move he later challenged and lost at the High Court. Despite his interest, Maiketso said that he was still assessing the viability of contesting.

“I have three factors that I am looking at, at the moment which will influence my decision to stand or not. I will not reveal the three factors, but I will make a decision soon,” Maiketso said.

He added, “Although I am yet to make a final decision I believe that I have a fair chance of winning the primary elections.  I believe I have made a mark in the city council and I want to further my political career.”

Maiketso added that he believes he has gathered enough political experience, which could help him muscle the constituency out of the hands of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). At the BCP primaries Maiketso is most likely to meet usual suspect in Moseki, who has contested and lost the Francistown East parliamentary general elections since 2004.

Despite his loss, Moseki is credited for improving the visibility of the BCP in Francistown East in recent years.

In the 2014 general elections, Moseki amassed 3,573 votes against the BDP’s 3,818. Moseki has also never gone through primaries in a bid to secure candidacy for the general elections.
