Master Zein reign supreme in fierce best DJ contest

The stage was set at Tsholofelo Park where a sizeable number of spectators turned out to witness eight DJs battling it out for the P10, 000 prize money. It was 20-year-old, Rewaldo Zen Fortuin popularly known by stage name, Master Zein who was crowned the winner of the competition.
The DJ’s were each given seven minutes to show case their skills on the one’s and two’s. They were judged on several items including, understanding of the equipment, controlling levels and the technique of applying and mixing effects amongst others. All the contestants stuck to the commercial genre of house music in effort to move the spectators attending the show.
The contestants incorporated a number of the hottest house singles in the country together with other music genre classics. Amongst the contestants was seasonal DJs including, DJ Keymaker of Serowe, Mr Ale of Gaborone and Selebi-Phikwe’s DJ Bino. It was however, the Ncojane born, Master Zein who wowed both the crowd and the judges.
Speaking to Arts and Culture after winning, a jubilant Master Zein said the competition was the right platform for the aspiring performers to expose their talents.
He said he has faced numerous challenges since DJ’ing in 2013, but was ecstatic to have been crowned the best DJ of this year’s edition of the competition in his second attempt.
He said the challenges he faced in his music journey inspired him ‘to go get it’ this year.
“This is a passion-driven path. I faced a lot of challenges along the way. I have been used and sabotaged but if you have the passion, you will never give up.
This is my second time (in the competition). Last year I lost out at the regional level. So this time around, I worked on rectifying the mistakes from the previous year, and I think it came out well as I managed to scoop the first position,” he said.
The ambitious youngster further revealed that in an effort to enhance his music career, he would be releasing a number of singles and an album at a later stage. “I have since moved to Gaborone. I will be working on a number of singles. I may release an EP (Extended Play) or album at a later stage.
I also intend on going around the schools trying to inspire all aspiring DJ’s who would want to make it in the music industry,” Master Zein said.
