Zimbabwean wins bodybuilding challenge

The show attracted body builders and power lifting enthusiasts from Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa and Zimbabwe. One of the organisers, Kudakwashe Zhara told Mmegi Sport yesterday thay they were impressed with the number of contestants who participated in the event. Around 50 bodybuilders battled for the grand prize.

Motswagole said they have never recorded such high numbers in their past competitions.  “The attendance was a good sign that the sport is growing in the country.

Despite that, some of our sponsors did not stick to the promises they made and we had to fund the competition from our own pockets,” he said.

Zhara said local body builders proved their mettle despite the tough competition they faced from the visitors.

He said power lifting was a favourite among army men as they fielded 25 contestants from Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB). He said the winners from various categories stand a chance to compete in international competitions. He said the competition is new in Botswana and only a few individuals have had a chance to compete outside the country such as Gontse Sechele.

The winner of the men’s physic section, Ithueng Morisky Siresi said the competition was tough and his opponents were well conditioned and their muscles were defined. Siresi said he prepared well for the competition, with a training programme that included proper diet for muscle building. “Bodybuilding is expensive and you have to stick to a particular diet for a specific season,” he said.

In the women’s physique, Botswana’s Tlotlo Nfila finished second behind South African, Bontle Maphoso.  Nfila said she had not prepared well for the competition as she did not expect a tough challenge from her opponents.

She said her opponents were on top of their game and gave her a run for her money.  USN, Bres Electrical, Notwane Pharmacy, Home Corp, Major Muscle and Fitness, Jack’s Gym, Johnson Crane Hire and Core Fitness Arena sponsored the competition.
