Already some members are calling secretive meetings behind others’ back, The Monitor has learnt.

The BDPNYEC chairperson, Simon Moabi said he was shocked that some youth committee members decided to hold an urgent meeting without his knowledge. Moabi said he presided over a meeting last Tuesday and there was no need for an urgent meeting two days later on Thursday.

“The people who held this meeting told me on Wednesday evening and I told them that there is no need for an urgent meeting, therefore I didn’t approve it.

“The constitution is very clear, I am the one who is supposed to call meetings. That meeting was unlawful and action will be taken against those culprits. I do not have a choice but to inform party central committee about the latest developments today (Monday),” Moabi said in an interview.

Moabi said there are allegations that they want to topple some of the members of the new committee “including me”. The BDP constitution article 43 says notice of any meeting of any organ of the party shall be given to all persons entitled to attend such meetings by most effective means of communication addressed to the current address of such member as given by such member to the secretary of the organ.

It also says such notice shall be given at least seven days prior to any such meeting, or any such time which may be deemed reasonable, provided that this time limit may be truncated if in the opinion of the chairperson of the organ which is to hold the meeting in question circumstances demand a shorter notice period.

However the BDP youth committee general secretary Thabo Autlwetse maintained that they had informed the chairperson but he said he was busy.

“We called the urgent meeting because we had to draw the action of plan for three months. The committee cannot work without action of plan.

I’m surprised that the chairperson claims that he was not informed. Those who did not attend the meeting had sent apologies. The meeting is legal and we don’t have any plan to topple anyone and for what,” Autlwetse said.
