The Nnywane River Bridge is currently closed after it was completely ruined by heavy rains that caused floods in Ramotswa and surrounding areas.

In an interview with The Monitor, Ramotswa police station traffic officer, Assistant Superintendent Agripa Gambule expressed concern over some drivers who continue to use the closed section of the road.

Gambule explained that the road signs have been put in place to alert and warn drivers and members of the public from crossing the bridge, but it is of concern that some people have decided to ignore the warning.

“Recently, when doing patrols we turned back five people who were driving with intention to cross the bridge despite its closure,” Gambule said.

“Crossing that bridge in that state people are putting their lives at risk because the bridge is likely to fall at any time.

We have realised that some people fail to use the alternative roads thinking that it will be taking most of their time hence consider to put their lives at risk by illegally crossing through the hazardous bridge,” Gambule said.

Gambule said that they suspect some people might be crossing the bridge early in the morning or at night when it’s dark.

“This is unacceptable behaviour especially that road signs have been put in place to inform and alert them about the closure of the bridge and the risk that it exposes to anyone who tries to cross it,” Gambule said.

Meanwhile Gambule has cautioned motorists to be alert when using the alternative, Ntlhantlhe-Mogobane road, saying traffic volume is high.

“The road has dangerous potholes towards Ntlhantlhe village that motorists should be cautious of when using this road. I am pleading with motorists to familiarise themselves with this road to avoid unnecessary accidents,” Gambule said.

He said the police have recorded fatal accidents in which two lives were lost along the road.
