“It is important to also note that party members through appropriate party structures are free to develop their own fundraising strategies for the benefit of their own interest and that of the party in general, provided they account for it. Those who ask for money in the party’s name must stop. This does not only compromise party growth, it is illegal and highly unethical,” Salakae said.

“Gala dinners remain the backbone of party finances. Gala dinners involve selling of tickets, more often than not on credit. This often leaves the party in bad and irrecoverable debt.”

He told members that the party relies on individual donations from party well-wishers, but they must ensure that such good gesture does not put the good name of the party into disrepute.

Salakae warned some MPs and some councillors who are defaulting to pay their monthly allowances.  He said if they do not pay the party will report them to lower structures and they would not be allowed to contest in the party’s primary elections.
