The incident happened on July 13, 2018 and the suspects allegedly made away with airtime and cash amounting to P160,000.  The money was allegedly funds for old age pensioners.

“The pensioners have still not received their allowances from the post office as investigations continue, we believe part of the money was their funds,” Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer-in-charge at Palapye police station assistant superintendent Kebonye Kodumane said.

Kodumane said only part of the airtime has been recovered from the three suspects.  He said the suspects were in possession of the airtime at the time of arrest.

At the scene of the crime, he said, the suspects gained entry into the post office through the roof, which they had cut. He said they broke the doors until they reached the room with safe where the cash was.

The suspects allegedly blasted the cash safe with explosives and made away with the money and airtime. They were apprehended a day after the incident. Kudumane said from the initial investigation they have learnt that there could be other suspects in the matter.

“The trio has appeared before the Palapye Magistrate’s Court and have been detained to assist with investigations. We have learnt that there could be others and we are still on their trail. We have not recovered everything that was stolen and we are on the hunt,” he said.

He advised that individuals and all businesses should take heed of their advice of ensuring that they keep large sums of money in the banks until at the time they need to use it.

“You would find large sums of money are kept in places with insubstantial security or worse no security at all. Business must reconsider that because they don't only lose the money, they also put the lives of the security personnel on the line,” he said.
