BNF constituencies go for re-run

Following the first lot of disastrous primaries early this month, eight wards also lodged complaints with the national electoral board, but two were referred to the appeals’ board.
Since, the BNF electoral board received 10 complaints after the results were announced. Some losing candidates even went to the extent of engaging their lawyers to write to the party.
The BNF election committee met on Tuesday and decided the fate of some of these complaints. Out of 10, eight were responded to while two were referred to the appeals’ board. The chairperson of BNF national election board, Jerry Rasetshwane confirmed that they had responded to some of the complaints.
“It is true we have decided on some of the complaints that were brought to us by some of the members who were unhappy with certain things during party primaries.
“Out of 10 cases, we made ruling in eight cases and two were referred to appeals board to decide on time. For those wards or constituencies that are going for re run, the elections will be held in the shortest time possible,” he said.
Rasetshwane said his committee has not decided on Kanye South constituency and they felt that the appeal’s board is the one, which will decide on it.
He confirmed that they had made a ruling for Takatokwane constituency, but they are yet to listen to people who had contested for parliamentary seats because one of them does not want re-run. Some BNF members who contested for primaries at Takatokwane are Elson Baeletsi, Boingotlo Moeng and Filbert Nagafela.
“Our committee will be forced to call members again to know why another one does not want a re-run. Some of the wards did not vote and we understand the results were sent by message at Takatokwane,” he said.
Rasetshwane added that at Molepolole North “we called for re-run in two wards, Borakalalo since we had cancelled the election and Boribamo East because one candidate’s name was not there on the ballot paper. At Borakalalo, one of the party members had kicked the ballot box.
The elections for Borakalalo and Boribamo would be held on August 4”. Although the issue of Kanye South was not discussed, Mmegi has learnt that the constituency might be headed for a re-run since the results were not announced because some wards did not go for elections.
