Woman hunts for P200 to avoid jail

The 32-year-old charged with threat-to-kill had been skipping court dates since last October, forcing magistrate, Bame Ngaka to slap her with a contempt of a court charge.

Though she missed three court appearances, Kalayamosu claimed she had simply mixed up the dates.  Ngaka, however, did not buy her excuse and ordered her to look for the P200 or face a 14-day jail term for contempt of court.

Kalayamosu has had the threat to kill case hanging over her head for over a year now. She is alleged to have indirectly uttered life threatening words to Josephine Kalayamosu on February 15, 2016 which include: “I will kill her and she will die before saying farewell to her mother, children and husband”.

She will appear again on April 23, 2017. Before the same court, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has pleaded with the court to withdraw charges against a 45-year-old woman accused of stealing utensils and farm equipment from Mmabadisa cattlepost.

According to prosecutors, Monnosi Ramasuswana and Jacob Moengele agreed to pay the complainant for stealing Robert Sinvula Masene’s property, which was valued at P182,299.06.

While magistrate Ngaka withdrew the charges and acquitted the two accused persons, their co-accused Onaathata Semoko will still face the heat after failing to pay.

Semoko could not account for his non-payment and will face trial on June 23, 2017.  The state is expected to bring a total of five witnesses.
