North West councillor threatens to strip naked

The specially nominated councillor, who is also a caucus chairman for the Botswana Democratic Party in the area, made the threat inside the Maun Administrative Authority (MAA) chambers when commenting on MAA chairperson, Gaokgakala Letswee’s speech.Molelo complained that he had raised numerous complaints about the poor safety of Toteng bridge, which does not have pedestrian sidewalks and rails.

According to Molelo, the lives of Toteng residents especially children, who use the bridge along the busy highway, are in constant danger as they have to compete for space with vehicles.

“I have made numerous calls about the poor status of this bridge. I promise that next time I will undress before this house to have my voice heard,” he said.

Meanwhile councillors called on government to help fight rising numbers of the bloodsucking fly that is ravaging livestock in Ngamiland. The fly, an annual terror for farmers, causes anaemia and mainly attacks cattle, sheep, goats and other livestock as well as pets such as dogs.

In his speech, Letswee reported that so far 22 goats had died as result of being bitten by the fly around Tsau, Sehitwa, Toteng and Shorobe areas. Letswee described the outbreak as intense around Lake Ngami, adding that farmers have been advised to use clout and dip on animals as well on their kraals to control the fly. In response, Sehitwa-Kareng councillor, Maitiro Segosebe observed that the animal mortality rate as a result of the fly might be higher than reported, while Bodibeng-Bothatogo-Somelo councillor, Morafemong Matsimanyane urged government to help the poor farmers with medicines to fight the fly.
